Another Chance
With another chance:
no more pathetic
misunderstood
loner
cowering in the shadows
wasting time
writing third-rate
unread unmoving poetry
No!
I would be out there
living
Following the successful formula
Swallowing all the lies
Smiling
as I spread and bent
forehead to toes.
Following the crowd
their opinions
and their flag
Reciting
all the latest clichés:
"It's like--
You know?
You see what I'm saying?"
A first-rate CONSUMEr
whistling commercial jingles
at the top
of my demographic bell-curve
looking after #1
as the world is geared to.
In another life
another chance:
I'd love 'em and leave 'em
seeking first my pleasure:
wealth, thrills, intrigues,
affairs...
Given another chance
I would have a horde
of friends and lovers
whom I'd treat with insolence
the more they loved me.
Casting caution
and integrity
to the wind
embracing conformity
I'd reap immense popularity &
melt into warm belonging at last.
With just another chance.
But not in this life.
No, not in my life.
