Imagine that you’re walking along, minding your own business, when suddenly a stranger dressed in rags gets in your face and demands that you hit him! Naturally you take him for a crazy man, and decline to strike him. Then he threatens you, claiming that you will be killed for not having obeyed him!
A rather strange story, no? But one straight from the Bible book of Kings. Our lesson for today is all about prophets of Jehovah, and is taken from 1 Kings chapters 20 through 22.
It seems that if a stranger asks you to strike him you’d better do it; he might be a prophet, and you’ll be killed for having refrained from violence and for having shown compassion to the mentally challenged. Don’t thank me for this sage advice; I can’t take credit; it’s just another valuable Bible lesson on morality. Don’t believe me? Then we’d better open our Bibles to today’s text:
By the word of Jehovah, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion: “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him. So he said to him: “Because you did not listen to the voice of Jehovah, as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you.” After he left him, a lion came upon him and killed him.
— 1 Kings 20:35-36
It turns out that this prophet wanted to be struck so that he could practice a deception on Ahab, the king of Israel. He wanted to fool Ahab into thinking that he had come from battle.
He found another man and said: “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him.
Then the prophet went and waited for the king by the road, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes.As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king: “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and there was a man coming out who brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is found missing, your life will have to take the place of his life, or else you will pay a talent of silver.’ And while your servant was busy here and there, suddenly the man was gone.”
The king of Israel said to him: “So your own judgment will be; you have decided it yourself.”
At that point, the prophet revealed the ruse he had played on Ahab:
Then he quickly removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets. He said to him: “This is what Jehovah says, ‘Because you have let the man whom I said should be destroyed escape from your hand, your life must take the place of his life, and your people the place of his people.’”
Ahab had made peace with Ben-hadad, the king of Damascus. This is what the prophet of Jehovah was so pissed off about. Prophets of a god of war (“Jehovah of armies“) tend to hate peace since it presents no opportunity for their god to shine. So, Jehovah threatened to kill Ahab for his peace-mongering ways, and to kill the Israelites to boot!
“At that the king of Israel went home to Samaria, sullen and dejected.” But then he evidently forgot all about being murdered along with his people, and decided to buy a vineyard from Naboth. But Naboth refused to sell it, and Ahab was depressed all over again.
However, Ahab’s wife Jezebel decided to cheer him up by arranging to have Naboth stoned to death, after which she took his vineyard and presented it to her husband as a gift.
When Jehovah heard about this, he got mad at Ahab (instead of the perpetrator Jezebel) and had the prophet Elijah declare the following to Ahab:
“Have you murdered a man and also taken his property?” This is what Jehovah says: “In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, the dogs will lick up your own blood.”
According to the Bible, Ahab had not murdered a man nor taken his property: his wife had. Jehovah was being unjust in sentencing the wrong person to death.
As soon as Ahab heard these words, he ripped his garments apart and put sackcloth on his body; and he went on a fast and kept lying down in sackcloth and walking despondently.
It’s odd that Ahab got so upset at this second death sentence from Jehovah’s prophets; he was already condemned to die by Jehovah for not having killed a man (Ben-hadad). Now he was condemned to die by Jehovah for having killed a man he did not kill (Naboth).
Jehovah’s word then came to Elijah the Tishbite: “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself on my account? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the calamity during his lifetime. I will bring the calamity upon his house in the days of his son.”
Jehovah must love sackcloth. Just don a garment made of this fabric (goat’s hair) and Jehovah will forgive you anything. In this case, he commuted Ahab’s death sentence (both of them.) However, being the just judge of all the universe that he is, he decided to punish Ahab’s son instead (despite what the prophet Ezekiel had declared about Jehovah not punishing a son for his father’s sin (Ez. 18:20).)
But Jehovah still wasn’t finished with having his prophets play tricks on this woe-begotten king. Even though he commuted his death sentences, and promised not to “bring calamity” upon him, Jehovah decided to kill Ahab anyway. It seems there was a war being considered against Syria in order to recapture the city of Ramoth-Gilead. All of the prophets told Ahab that he would succeed in this — though Jehovah was planning for his demise:
All the other prophets were prophesying the same way, saying: “Go up to Ramoth-gilead and you will be successful; Jehovah will give it into the king’s hand.”
But Micaiah said: “As surely as Jehovah is living, whatever Jehovah says to me is what I will speak.”
Then he came in to the king, and the king asked him: “Micaiah, should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should we refrain?” At once he replied: “Go up and you will be successful; Jehovah will give it into the king’s hand.”
At that the king said to him: “How many times must I put you under oath not to speak to me anything but the truth in the name of Jehovah?”
Micaiah then said: “Therefore, hear the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne and all the army of the heavens standing by him, to his right and to his left. Jehovah then said, ‘Who will fool Ahab, so that he will go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one was saying one thing while another said something else. Then a spirit came forward and stood before Jehovah and said, ‘I will fool him.’ Jehovah asked him, ‘How will you do it?’ He replied, ‘I will go out and become a deceptive spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ So he said, ‘You will fool him, and what is more, you will be successful. Go out and do that.’
And now Jehovah has put a deceptive spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours, but Jehovah has declared calamity for you.”
Notice how Micaiah vowed that “as sure as Jehovah is living” he would say whatever Jehovah told him to say. Yet, at first Micaiah said that Ahab would be successful because Jehovah would “give it into the king’s hand.” But when admonished to keep his oath, Micaiah told Ahab that the unchanging god Jehovah had “declared calamity” for him, despite having previously stated “I will not bring the calamity during his lifetime.”
For having revealed the con, one of the other prophets struck Micaiah. But unlike the first prophet in our tale, Micaiah didn’t like being struck (an inconsistent, unpredictable lot, these prophets.)
Ahab decided to believe the majority of the prophets instead of Micaiah, and went to the battle, where he was mortally wounded and died, and the dogs licked up his blood “according to the word that Jehovah had spoken.” So, the Bible contends that Micaiah was right: Jehovah had sent a lying spirit into the mouth of all the prophets to fool Ahab into thinking that Jehovah would see him safely through the battle — all the while Jehovah intended to see him killed!
So, what do we learn from these three chapters of the Bible? Well, it seems Jehovah and his prophets practice deception, encourage violence, contradict themselves, and punish the peacemakers [despite another prophet who promised that the peacemakers were “blessed” and would be called — just like himself — “sons of God.” (MT 5:9).] They also punish the wrong people (the innocent instead of the guilty).
And, oh yeah: they lie, big time; no matter what oaths they take or vows they make.
So, it should come as no surprise that the organization that today claims to be “Jehovah’s prophet” engages in similar behavior:
- Demanding unthinking obedience to counter-compassionate orders (such as shunning family members and letting children die for want of a transfusion.)
- Commanding their people to rejoice at the thought of their coming longed-for ultimate war: Armageddon, where they envision billions of people dying horribly violent deaths.
- Upholding the time-honored prophetic traditions of deception and lying.
- Making false prophecies.
- Contradicting themselves.
- Punishing the wrong people:
- rape victims (who neglect to scream)
- parents who choose their children over the Watchtower
- whistle-blowers who expose their harmful policies and who point out their lies
- people who love one another (of the same gender)
So, when the Watchtower claims to be “Jehovah’s modern-day prophet on Earth,” I guess they really do have a point: in many ways they act just like the prophets in these chapters of First Kings.

It certainly presents a FAR different picture of what we have going on today with the ‘society’. WOW! Doesn’t that sound cultish? I never thought about that before…whoa. They ARE telling the truth about who they are. It is more frightening that I imagined when first DISFELLOWSHIPPING them from MY life Dec5, 2012! Then washing SATAN’S organizations stain off by being baptized in Jesus’ name 3 months later! The first warm day in Delaware. 39′ with a brilliant sun made it feel like a balmy 75! Thank YOU Steve! Absolutely I df’d them…they were in control of my life for 53 years since I was 3. After my last meeting where my eyes were opened by the announcements…I spent 10 15 hour days of non-stop research…from jws and cults, jws and scandals, which led me to jws and the occult. Once I found that out…most definitely did I want to wash their STAIN off my skin! Have been like Jeremiah ever since warning EVERYONE about this demonic family destroying cult! First one was a disfellowshipping…no one was upset but me! A sister wrote a note that said, we do not grieve the df’d ones. Really? Didn’t the Israelites of old rip their clothes and sit among the ashes when a loved one left the TRUE faith? Second, do not use social media. Third, since the end is around the corner there is no need for our brothers and sisters to be burdened with life ins policy’s, 401k’s IRA’s estates unworn jewelry! Shades of 1975! The scariest part was, people actually nodding their heads in agreement! This was the first time it hit me that something was wrong. Emotional, thought behavior and information control. And I had no idea of the BITE model of cults at that time.

I had the privilege of reading the letter to congregations that all k/h loans had been cancelled…..un be known to congregations that the letter had many other pages attached to it detailing the new arrangement. (Congregations to contribute a fixed sum….reviewed annually…to the new arrangement…but if you had had a loan then the new fixed sum couldn’t be less than the original loan amount…..(i was secretary at the time)….what a wonderful ‘provision’.. ?.
Alarm bells were wringing on and off prior to that…..’We must do whatever the faithful slave tell us…even if it seems strange to human reasoning(or words to that effect).
And always hated the extreme stand on disfellowshipped ones.
Generation change (again)….holy not doing a very good job informing them there then…as well as latest ‘new light’ being absolute twaddle.
Then I found out about the ‘cross’ references in the reasoning book ( the full references )…and literally started shaking and felt physically sick…then discovered the ‘607’ date is nonsense as well.
I have since stood down as secretary but am still an elder…..resigning that as well soon I can….(trying not to make too many waves at the moment).
I have been the same as you and have spent the last two months obsessed with finding out as much as possible about what I had got myself into….was hoping to just fade but can’t see that happening in reality….I can’t see me keeping my mouth shut about what I now know.
I haven’t discussed how I am feeling with my son yet. 16 years old….raised a witness…stood up for it all in school etc etc…that’s going to be a tough one!!!
‘Fortunately’ my wife never was interested so that’s one ‘blessing’ on hindsight.
Tough time ahead but I cant ‘unlearn’ what I now know so will have to deal with it as best I can.

Yes, my husband too. He only got baptized to marry me. Then left. I have ‘used’ him time and time again when telling the elders I will NOT NOT talk to someone because they are df’d. It is cruel. I could NEVER do it. When I df’d them…I didn’t shun them…they chose to shun me because of everything I ASKED based on scriptures. I DARED to question. Spanish Inquisition! The Age of Darkness indeed!

I had the same reaction when they disfellowshipped my sister. She even said to me: “I’ll understand if you no longer what to speak to me.” But for me the decision was instantaneous and absolute: I would NEVER allow an organization to come between me and my sister. It’s a little thing called “love” — something the WT evidently can’t comprehend.
Although I had previously agreed in principle with shunning (as I had foolishly agreed to everything the WT said as a package-deal) when I was called upon to actually take part in it I felt it was wrong — I KNEW it was wrong and hateful. That started me examining what else might be wrong with what I had been taught, and I soon joined my sister back in the real world.

I had no idea thre was so many of us when that happened to me Dec5, 2012. I spent 10 15 hr days researching every link on the meaning of cult trying to dismiss what my children said for 20 years. It wasn’t until a link brought me to a 10 question quiz. 4 or more yes…you’re in a cult. I answered 10 out of 10 yes. It felt like the wind was knocked out of me. I Cried for hours…this was my life 53 years since I was 3! After that I prayed silently for wisdom…placed the bible in my lap and let it open on its own. Mind you, I have read the bible numerous times over the years…but NEVER saw these 4 verses until the moment I prayed. Ps146:3-4, Jer17:5, 1Joh4:1 but the one that forced me to search jws and cults, jws and scandals…which led to jws and the occult…Luk21:8. Not only do I know every scandal and belief system there was being fully armed and VERY astute of satans cleverness… I am one of the biggest anti-jw you will find. I can’t help but warn EVERYONE about this demonic family destroying cult. But…not until I relay what I found out…until my audience is begging to know what cult it is… I df’d them! Not the other way around.

So am I! I don’t believe in the God of the OT. I think he was cruel, inhumane and spiteful! When I read in Jeremiah, that he had his wife Artemis destroyed and all her temples…I knew something was very wrong. All I know is every time my mother threw our bibles and books and magazines out of the house in one of her weekly rages, that night the demons would attack! My brother used to call them the snot people and they sounded like a helicopter was in the room. It is VERY vivid as all traumas tend to be. We were often suffocated by the snot men…we were only children…NO BEING HAS ANY EXCUSE TO HARM A CHILD>>>PERIOD!

Actually, we had it built to move in. The funny thing is, about 15 years ago I returned to see the house when I was back in my home state….the people who bought it said that they were plagued by demons too. Then one year the pipes under the extension burst. It was a crawl space, and when they dug to get to the pipe, they found a mary statue upside down under a buried pipe. Once they removed it, the demons stopped. So the only thing I can think of, you can agree with me or not. But satan doesn’t bother with children, but demons may…God forbids idols, they are demonic and cause idolatry. Once the idol was removed…no more problem. That’s all I will say on the matter. We are all entitled to our own opinions from our experiences in life. I don’t care if anyone believes me or not…I know what happened and that’s good enough for me. But I thank you for your concern on the matter…it was really nice of you to extend your thoughts. 😉

Maybe the world’s ills are caused by people and natural causes: not by spirits.
The up-side of that is that we can maybe do something effectual about them rather than praying or wasting our time and energy in the counter-productive hating of each other for our varying beliefs in a spirit world we can know nothing about.

I agree, and try to keep an open mind. I’ve just never seen any good evidence of spirits, or anything that couldn’t be better explained by natural causes. There have been scientific examinations of spirit claims, but they have all come up empty, so it’s to the point of: “why waste much time on it anymore, when it appears to be a dead end?”
Everything we once thought was caused by spirits is now known to have natural causes. (e.g. eruptions of volcanoes which once were thought to be caused by angry gods are now known to have natural causes; “demon possession” is now recognized as mental illness, and can be treated…) So that it turns out to be a fair statement to say that we attributed supernatural causes to things out of ignorance. As ignorance abated the spirits vanished.
Since the hypothesis of spirit-influence has not stood up to examination nor experimentation, it thus far appears to be an invalid hypothesis that should be shelved until some real evidence comes along. When that happens, I’ll be all ears. But till then, it doesn’t make sense to me to base my philosophy of life on the existence of spirits.

WELL YEAH ANCIENT SUPERSTITIONS DON’T MAKE MUCH SENSE IN THE FACE OF MODERN SCIENCE. ALCHEMY WAS THE BEGINNING OF EXAMING NATURAL PROCESSES LOOKING FOR THE ROOT CAUSE BEHIND CERTAIN EVENTS IN THE PAST.
SCIENCE IN MOST CASES IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE REASONS GIVEN BEHIND THE CAUSE OF EVENTS IN THE MAJOR “HOLY” RELIGIOUS BOOKS.

I do not hate anyone….nothing I post says I hate. I am wary, and aware…there is a difference. And I agree, none of us know what happens when our body dies…NO ONE.

Given my deep-seated desire to be free and independent, I don’t abide by your rule not to converse with you. I will continue to reply to your comments when I feel I have something of value to add. I’m sure you’ll understand that. You’re free to ignore my comments, of course.
I agree that, according to the Bible, Jehovah was the real culprit behind the death of Job’s family.
My point is that belief that Jehovah and Satan are real is what leads to people hating each other. I am all for tolerance. People can believe Jehovah or Satan is their father all they like. I just wonder why they do, and try to point out where the extensions of such beliefs may be harmful (such as when they lead to hatred and intolerance.)
BTW: I liked it much better when you STOPPED YELLING and turned your caps-lock off.
